My name is Makai Walker and I am a Junior at Estancia High school. I was born in Aurora, Colorado and moved down to southern California later in the summer of 2015. I enjoy new experiences and meeting new people. #BlueHairedKid #GoodVibesOnly #EstanciaPoductionDrama
On January 22nd of 2019 Estancia High School’s varsity girl’s soccer team played against Santa Ana High School. The Eagle’s won with a score of 4-2 now making their overall 6-7-1 with the Saint’s now 9-10-2.
This match had started off one-sided in terms of ball handling. Estancia had obtained and possessed the ball the majority of the game with sharp handling as seen by Desiree Mendoza (center forward) #9. Desiree says “we started off strong but we realized that we got a little too comfortable and that resulted in us picking it up to finish them off strong.” Adriana Ruiz (center-back) agrees stating “we did well connecting the ball at the beginning but in the second half we improved our communication.” The Eagles displayed skilled ball control as if the ball was prisoner to the feet of Desiree mendoza as she moved through Santa Ana defense to score three goals. A memorable goal worth noting was that of Mendoza (#9) zig-zagging through almost a hallway-like path made out of defensive players. The end result was that of Mendoza sending the ball from the 20th yard line straight over the opposing team's goalie to score the third goal. The first was scored by Paulina Cortez who plays right forward with solid determination. Paulina says ”We started off good and we new we had to beat them,” as she explains that losing to the Saints previously was a strong motivation to win the game. Next, the Eagles will play a home conference game against Calvary Chapel on January 28, 2019 at 5p.
The United States government has been shut down since midnight of Saturday the 22nd of December 2018. This has been the longest recorded time that the government has ever been shut down. The reason for this shutdown is due to a disagreement. Our president, Donald J. Trump and Democratic Congress have not decided on whether or not to fund the U.S.-Mexico border wall. The Democratic Party is a no go for the wall as opposed to Trump’s yes.
So far Trump has pinned the all the fault on the Democratic Party. Workers have been furloughed for over three weeks now. No matter who’s fault it is, we are definitely in the midst of a crisis. I could not imagine not being paid over such an infantile dispute.
People have literally missed rent payments as #ShutdownStories fills social media pages to prove so. I understand that Trump must fill his promises regarding his candidacy but that does not make him just in shutting down the government. That does not allow him to force federal workers to struggle in effort to pay rent or go into bank accounts with money saved up for emergencies when such an ordeal could be settled in a whole different manner.
Now I’m not too invested in the world of politics but I do know that the furloughing of federal workers could have been avoided if the funding of the wall had been passed. This would be the best way to go because the wall would not be finished by the end of Trump’s term.
As of right now after all Trump has gotten himself into, I do not believe that he will be re-elected. Thus, the funding can be cut by the next president and we lose money as opposed to having workers either not work or work without pay until we(democrats) agree to fund the wall. The repercussions for this were not properly weighed out on both sides of the argument. As for the shutdown, it occurred in a hasty decision as would be expected of President Donald J. Trump.
Swinging right into the facts, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse(2018) follows the story of teenager Miles Morales the first African American Spider-Man and the second Latino Spider-Man after Miguel O’Hara who was the title character of the 1990’s series Spider-Man 2099. The protagonist Morales grew up in Brooklyn with a father of African American descent and a Puerto Rican mother. Following the storyline, Morales’ first appearance was in 2011 in Ultimate Fallout #4 following Peter Parker’s death in Death of Spider-Man. Similar to Parker, he gets his powers when bitten by a radioactive spider on a subway in New York.
This 2018 animation brought forth a lot of laughter in the theater. From Miles nonchalantly brushing off a radioactive spider bite to getting stuck on ceilings at the wrong time. I wouldn’t have been surprised to see people falling out of their seats. One thing worth noting is the style of the motion pictures. The story Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been created in comic book-like illustrations adding a classic touch in recognizing comic origin. Another cool detail in the making of Morales like previous Spider-men and Woman (Gwen Stacy), he is alienated and has to experience a heartbreaking loss in order to fully understand his powers and how to use them. That being said, like a true hero, he stays positive singing to “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee. Honestly, I bought the ticket not expecting much from the movie but it was awesome! I give the movie an A+ no doubt. If you fancy the originality and humorous personality of Peter Parker as seen in Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Avenger’s Infinity War you will definitely like this movie.
On December 17, 2018 Andrew Cuomo, 56th governor of New York, announced his support for the legalization of recreational marijuana for adults in the Big Apple. Both the state Senate and the state Assembly currently have bills proposing the legalization of the “drug”. Cuomo is also interested in dropping charges of those who have been arrested for marijuana.
I fully support the usage of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Medicinal as treatment for illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, Cancer, Crohn’s disease, Epilepsy and eating disorders like Anorexia, the list goes on. Marijuana is a great medicine straight from the Earth.
Some may argue that legalization of this “drug” will make it easier for minors to obtain it, but is that really such a bad thing? Current legalized substances like alcohol and cigarettes kill humans with no good benefits and they’ve been around since North America was discovered. Scientists try so hard to find problems with marijuana when the results of alcohol and cigarettes are clear as day. Marijuana alters the mind? Well so does alcohol. Marijuana is a gateway drug but so are cigarettes. If addiction is the feared factor than what’s not an addiction these days? Addiction is the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. Everyday people are becoming addicted to coffee, television, and even fitness. I would much rather be addicted to marijuana instead of cigarettes or being an alcoholic.
Stepping back, Cuomo wants to legalize the usage of marijuana for adults, meaning it will still be illegal for minors to use and possess it. Cuomo says “Let’s legalize te adult use of recreational marijuana, once and for all”. In agreement with Cuomo, the marijuana industry is what some may call ‘’boomin”. Cuomo states “states like Colorado, the first to establish a regulated adult-use marijuana marketplace, have seen successes that have debunked some lawmakers’ and law enforcers’ predictions that such policies would result in disaster.”
Nepotism is the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs. President Donald J. Trump has been under investigation for collusion during the 2016 election by Robert Mueller special council. Michael Cohen Trump's personal lawyer, is now backing the charges against Trump.
There should be no person in the white house related to the president including that of friends and the promising of jobs in an unprofessional manner as the president has done. Currently his Cabinet consists of his daughter Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and son in-law Jared Kushner. Reasons for this should be very obvious. Where there is nepotism there is favoritism, inequity and corruption.
Zooming out to see the bigger picture, corruption is dividing the people. Making matters worse, it's in the White House, the heart of America. Nepotism puts all the power in the hands of one and our president controls it all. The heart of America has been poisoned and it now makes sense as to why we have been so sick. We have lost sight that the purpose of the white house is to think of and for the people of America.
Nepotism has not only the potential to effect the people but has come with it’s repercussions for our president. He stated that he had given Cohen the job as reward for a “favor”. Trump’s lawyer has now plead guilty to lying to Congress about negotiations to build a tower for President Trump in Russia. According to Trump, his personal lawyer Cohen is now cooperating with the investigation in order to shorten his sentence. Trump has responded to Cohen's actions by calling him a “weak person”. If this were to be the case, would the president still have put Cohen in the position of his lawyer knowing this? When I see it from that perspective I believe that rewarding him for the “favor” is to blame.
Unity is the state of being united or joined as a whole. Unity Day is the national day of bullying prevention where orange clothing is worn to to give light to a rather dark subject. In support of this day, retailers sell orange products or someone may take an orange coffee thermal to work as another form of support of Unity Day. It’s not just about wearing orange and bullying, it’s about coming together to be unified.
On Wednesday October 24, 2018, Estancia High School commenced its first Unity Night. Unity Night, like Unity Day, is about people coming together in support of the prevention of bullying. Unity Night at Estancia High School was hosted and supported by ASB and the Link Crew program. Admission to Unity night cost $6.00 including a TK Burger meal of one’s choosing. “The food was delicious!” junior link leader Xitlali Martinez said. Food options included either a cheeseburger, hamburger, chicken sandwich, grilled cheese or veggie burger. These also included a side of some delicious thin crispy fries. Leslie Ventura, another junior Link Leader said, “The fries were pretty bomb”. Hanging with friends and eating TK Burger was only the beginning of Unity Night. After eating from 5-6:30pm came the movie. Unity Night 2018 presented Avengers Infinity War. The night ended with a PG-13 rated movie in the big gym from 6:30-9pm.
Checking the weather is essential to planning your trip to Knott’s Scary Farm. A person can love the rain as well as as Knott’s Scary Farm. That being said a rainy night at Knott’s Scary Farm is the worst.
Scary Farm is an annual Halloween-themed event of Knott’s Berry Farm from September 20 to October 31. From my past experience, the first thing to notice walking in, is a scary man sliding around on the floor in knee pads at the gate. On a rainy night, walking in is lame and boring because there’s a crowd of angry people trying to get refunds at the Information building. Note: there are no refunds. The rides will not be running in caution of a lighting strike. To be there unwillingly is no problem, there is nothing to be afraid of because the rain scares the monsters away. There are little to no monsters out on a rainy night compared to a regular night. This leaves the mazes and the arcade games they have as the only things to do. At least an hour wait is the average amount of time the lines are in the rain. No jacket?, When it begins to rain they sell rain ponchos for only $3. A normal night consist of high levels of suspense and terror as a variety of scary characters roam the park throughout the night. Lines are also shorter on normal nights because the rides are open as well as the mazes. In the rain, I rate the experience a 6/10. The rain absolutely robs the experience of ‘Scary Farm’. A rating of 9/10 would be a normal night full of excitement. Tickets range from $44 to $60 depending on whether you go on the weekend or weekday. It starts at 7pm to 1am, or 2am if it’s the weekend.
“Get to the choppers!” Pred4tor(2018) Takes place in the streets of suburbia this time, an undoubtedly unique young boy named Rory McKenna(Jacob Tremblay) accidentally triggers the return of one of the most lethal species in the universe. In this surprisingly comedic film, ex-soldier Quinn Mckenna (Boyd Holbrook) and his team take on this new genetically modified hunter along with the bothersome government agent Traeger( Sterling K. Brown).
This film had great timing with its comedy hitting viewers when the tension was high but without overdoing it. As a person who enjoys the classics, this film would be appealing to those who enjoy the action and amazing special effects. One cool thing worth noting is how a few of the lines included in the film, referred to other scenes in previous films in the Predator series. Although this film had its hilarious moments, the majority of the plot was absolutely horrible. The original objective(revealed later in the film) of the Predator has almost no relation to the dramatic events that play out in the first half of the movie. A disappointment was that the movie was not scary, a few jumpscares would not have been a bad thing. Included in the cast are Olivia Munn(Casey Bracket), Trevante Rhodes(Nebraska Williams), Keegan-Michael Key(Coyle), Thomas Jane(Baxley), Alfie Allen(Lynch), and August Aguilera(Nettles). Although the movie was funny and action-packed, I believe that the plot earned the film a C+ for previously stated reasons.
